What can a student/practitioner expect in your class(es)?
I consider my teaching to be intuitive and receptive, the pace is set by the title of the class but what we work on is based on how your body and mind feel. I offer a lot of verbal cueing to help you align for your body and gentle adjustments in the form of metta (loving-kindness).  Class is about you and I try to empower everyone as best as I can.  You will receive encouragement to honor your needs and do what feels best on an individual level – child’s pose, downward facing dog, svasana, fetal position…any pose that gives you what you need.  We will Om in every class and often there is opportunity to chant in Sanskrit.

What challenges have you overcome that make you a better Yoga and Pilates teacher/person?
Low back, whip lash, knee and shoulder injuries physically. Deep grief, and PTSD emotionally. We never know why a person comes to class. A client who was initially very awkward in her body used to come for private instruction with her daughter. Gradually she got so good she started coming to classes as well. Three years went by, she survived cancer. Shared about her daughter’s wedding and funerals of aging parents but kept coming. One day I mistakenly assumed her daughter was an only child. She corrected me; “I had a son who committed suicide.” Turns out this horrible event occurred 6 months before her first lesson. I’m crying as I type her words “It was the Pilates that got me through it.” With no Yoga training at that point, I am eternally grateful I had a little patience and empathy which I would not have had without my own experiences. Empathy healed us both.

What inspired you to teach Yoga?
I actually taught my 1st class at the New Age Center around 1994.  I had been attending weekly classes there for about 2 years and the instructor was going to be on vacation for several weeks.  She basically ‘assigned’ me to teach while she was gone.  I guess I was ready to become an instructor : )

What is your favorite Yoga pose to practice and why?
My favorite yoga pose would have to be half pigeon because it opens up the hips and legs, especially after sitting for most of the day. The pose can also be done with different variations so most students can access the stretch’s benefits.

What challenges have you overcome that make you a better Yoga teacher/person?
I am in long term recovery from substance abuse and yoga has allowed me one more tool to better achieve my full potential in sobriety and life.

What inspired you to teach Yoga?
My inspiration for teaching yoga is to help other people find some peace. Whether that means taking time for yourself in a busy day or letting go of expectations, I am here for you. I believe yoga has something to offer everyone. If my class is not the one for you, I encourage you to keep trying classes with other instructors! There are so many wonderful teachers out there and you are bound to find a class you love 🙂

What brought you to Yoga?
As a busy, working single mom, I had dabbled in yoga for many years, stopping and starting with DVDs or the occasional class at the Y. I never really had the resources (time and money) to cultivate a consistent practice. That all changed in 2017 with true love. Finding myself going through some major transitions all at once – becoming an empty nester, a job change, a difficult breakup, and moving to a new home, I met my husband as he was practicing on his own front porch right across the street from my new apartment. Yoga has become central not only to our relationship but also as a way to manage those curveballs of life.

What can a student/practitioner expect in your class(es)?
Fun! Happiness, lighthearted authenticity. No matter what style I’m teaching, I want the students to have fun, not take themselves to seriously, listen to their bodies and honor where they’re at that day. With me, you’ll get lots of laughter and encouragement! I OM, I chant in Sanskrit, and I encourage each practitioner to be themselves, and let go for that day.

What inspired you to teach Yoga?
Yoga Teacher Training  began for me as an opportunity to deepen my practice and grow in my understanding of yoga.  After just a few weeks, it became apparent that yoga is more than just self-study and self-improvement, but the opportunity to help others grow.  Yoga should be unintimidating, fun, funny and for all people.  We take so much in life so seriously, yoga shouldn’t be one of those things.

Kallie Pretnar

What inspired you to teach Yoga?
I was inspired to teach yoga because it has had so many benefits for me, such as getting rid of my lower back pain, reducing my stress, and making me more mindful, and I want to share those benefits with others. I have also been a part of studios that I do not feel comfortable in, which has inspired me to become a teacher that provides students with an inclusive, lighthearted, comfortable place to practice. I was also inspired to teach because there is such a general stigma of yoga that a person is not strong enough or flexible enough to practice, and I want to break that stereotype that people have of yoga.
